How to Build a Dyke

Dundee Conservation Volunteers rebuild crumbling stone walls.

Here's how to Restore a Dry Stane Dyke

1 Stone suffers over time through frost and physical damage. Find a bit that needs repair.

4. Place "Through Stones" that go all the way through the dyke at regular intervals. These are very important to the wall's strength.

6. Finally place on the "Top Stone". This is a line of stone pointing up. It adds weight to Coverband to push the stone together and add strength.

2. Remove all the stone and lie out clear of the dyke. Dig out the foundation and put in BIG stone.

3. Build the wall in layers, ensure all stones placed are not wobbly.

5. The last layer of stone is the "Coverband". A layer of big flat stone that covers the layers beneath, keeping out water and holding both sides together.

That's the basics. Now come out on a Conservation Volunteer Task and try it and learn for real.

It is the most constructive and satisfying way to conserve a wildlife habitat.
