Tropical Fish
Freshwater
I have never met anyone who popped in & didn’t mention the enjoyment of looking at the fish. Equally some of them have said they will start but often say it must be too hard for them. That is not true!
Tropical fish needs to be cared for but not as much as traditional pets, such as cats & dogs. An example of the difference is feeding time. Fish, in the wild, often miss food for a period of time. I think that is unlike the cats & dogs feeding time. The other side is that such things as dogs & cats become part of your family whereas fish probably don’t.
One aspect about feeding fish is that it is very critical! Too many fish die as their owners over fed them. My view is that if a fish equates to an adult, they only need to be fed once a day. As said above, if due to other commitments they can’t be fed for a day or slightly longer, the food must be the same level as normal or perhaps less.
As you will see below, I have written about fish within their families but also various other items. As for the names, the family name can be classed as a common name however the fish are shown as common & scientific names. Some the fish have no common name therefore only the scientific name shown.
To jump from one to another, you will have to use the link, which will be listed at the end of the page. Needless to say, these fish are the ones, which have been kept by us. That list will never end, so please keep coming back.

Anabantids have the facility of breathing atmospheric air. Their labyrinth organ allows them to survive in waters that have limited oxygen. They build bubble-nests for breeding & the male blows the eggs with bubbles of saliva. Dependant on the size of the tank, females are best kept away from the male after spawning & then the male once the fry are swimming.
Catfishes barbels equate to cats’ whiskers therefore their name. With the exception of the north & south poles, catfishes are found throughout the world. They’re generally found at the bottom levels & as some aren’t good swimmers, they anchor themselves to surfaces using their sucker mouths. Most are nocturnal bar Corydoras who are active by day. ![]()

Characins go from a lovely peaceful, small fish to the one many people fear, Piranha! Regardless of that comment, many of the fish have bright colours & through shoaling the delight is wonderful. As you will read within, their ears are far better than other fish & one needs it as they are blind. They swim mainly in the middle of the tank.
Cichlids have an amazing behaviour! They on one hand are good parents & on the other they’re territorial, with some worse than others. In breeding, some males dig a breeding pit & then the female lays the eggs into it. The eggs & subsequently the fry are protected. Any other fish that swims too close to the eggs or fry will have an unhappy male parent chasing them off. Occasionally the female parent joins in but more often she is beside the eggs or fry, leaving the male to deal with it. ![]()

Cyprinids are active & prefer to stay in groups. They are popular fish for those keeping tropical fish. They include barbs, goldfish & sharks. In case you wonder, shark is a common name for some of them & they are not sharks, as its their shape, which is similiar to those in the sea. One thing for Cyprinids is they love to eat!
When reading a book about Gobies, the majority of them are about Marine/Brackish Gobies. Brackish water is the area where rivers flow into the sea & therefore become slightly salty. As I keep freshwater fish, I have only one species but as you can see they are attractive fish. No doubt, in time the number of species will increase. ![]()

Livebearers produce fry rather than eggs. These are easily bred & more often than not they don’t come from the natural environment. Due to man-made substances, the fish you see in a shop are completely different to those in the wild. Either way, those in shops are fine & the fish are community fish & peaceful.
Loaches dwell at the bottom however the one described within generally swims though out the tank but more often than not from mid-bottom levels. They're mainly shy & certain loaches hide themselves under the gravel. Like catfish, they have barbels to help them locate food, without them, they would have a problem in murky waters. ![]()

Due to the name I first thought Rainbows fish were colourful, I was right! On top of that, they’re active whist still being peaceful & like to be in groups. Their natural habitats are Australia, New Guinea & adjacent islands. Like many fish, they’re variants however two Rainbows I have & I haven’t got a clue which they are therefore description is within.
This section shows Web links to people I know have an involvement with fresh or marine watered fish, etc. ![]()
